Running analogies. They obviously are great parallels for the road of life. (Pun intended) There are entire rows of shelves in bookstores dedicated to advice for life via running. You’ve heard them I’m sure…”just keep putting one foot in front of the other” and so on….
My personal favorite is “Its all downhill from here.” It happens to be a saying that doesn’t sound so uplifting if you don’t actually run. But upon a second thought, you can see how if one was running…. the downhill portion would be of great comfort and joy. 🙂
My life of late is feeling very much like an uphill climb. When running up a hill, I know exactly what I should be doing. Take a shorter stride, (smaller steps) conserve my effort, breathe, stay upright (posture is important) walk if I need to… I want to make it to the peak and still have energy to keep moving. I don’t want to exhaust myself.
The problem is though, this climb to attain a new “calling” in my life feels torturously slow. It feels like climbing a 45 degree hill in mid-august heat when you’re already 14miles in, and out of fluids. Progress is less than slow. Every step I take makes me fearful that my muscles may give, and I’ll be tumbling back down to the bottom in no time.”Where’s the top of this BLEEPING hill already?!”
I find myself returning to my running to find sanity, to find calm in this turbulent time of upheaval and change. I know it’s just a hill. I just have to get to the top of this hill. The only way to make forward progress is to keep moving…. “if you’re going through hell, keep going.” Keep putting one foot in front of the other and remember that after every climb, eventually there is hopefully a nice coast downhill.
